Using hypnotherapy to help with commitment phobia
Commitment phobia is a term which refers to the fear of having to commit to something. Commitment phobia can affect the commitment to almost anything, but is usually associated with commitment to relationships.
What are the symptoms of commitment phobia?
Someone with commitment phobia can have any (or many!) of the symptoms shown here... quite often, when people come along to have a chat with us about commitment phobia, they say they definitely identify with this list!
The symptoms of commitment phobia can include...
- Having a very critical attitude towards the other person, which can not only hurt the other person, but can also hurt the relationship between those people.
- Deliberately upsetting, annoying or hurting the partner in the relationship, so that the relationship (which may well be fine in many other ways) is effectively sabotaged. If the person keeps cancelling dates, or arriving late for example, the relationship as a whole can be damaged.
- Avoiding doing anything that might cause you to be noticed by anyone who might want to start a relationship with you.
- Rejecting the advances of others, either overtly, or covertly (by sabotaging the relationship from the very start).
- Yo-yo relationships, where there is an almost 'cyclic' aspect to the relationship, where the commitment phobic person is affectionate towards their partner for a while, and then pushes them away, and then is affectionate again.... and so on.
- Fearing losing your own identity if you were to allow yourself to get into a relationship.
- The commitment phobic person will often completely avoid the subjects of moving in, engagement, buying a house or marriage.
- Some commitment phobic people will move in, get engaged, or get married, only to find that it changes the way they feel in the relationship, and they may feel the need to sabotage the relationship to get out of the situation.
- Commitment phobic people will often have unrealistic ideas of what constitutes a suitable partner.... they may believe that the 'right person' for them doesn't exist
- The commitment phobic person may go into a relationship with someone who isn't interested in forming a long term relationship
- Commitment phobic relationships will often cover huge distances... e.g. one partner lives in London, the other in New York.
- Commitment phobia can affect other things as well as relationships... careers, friendships and even therapy can be affected!
